Amazing news report from Iceland: a British team of scientists has discovered the longest lived animal ever, a 405-year-old clam from off the north coast of Iceland. Sad to say, Ming (Mr. Clam) is no longer with us, but he did live for a very long time. For those of us seeking eternal youth, one of the scientists had this encouraging comment:
If, in Arctica islandica, evolution has created a model of successful resistance to the damage of ageing, it is possible that an investigation of the tissues of these real life Methuselahs might help us to understand the processes of ageing.
