How Green is Iceland?
The current issue of National Geographic, March 2008, features an interesting, well-balanced look at an issue currently generating huge controversy in Iceland: the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Project. This project involved damming glacial rivers and flooding over 22 square miles of pristine wildnerness in the Iceland interior highlands, in order to power a huge new aluminum smelter on the eastern fjord of Reyðarfjörður. Take a look to get an overview of some of the issues, and see some compelling photographs.
